Hormone therapy drugs like Prempro, Premarin, and Provera are used to treat the hot flashes and other symptoms that accompany menopause. In 2002, a major study conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) determined that Prempro, Premarin and similar drugs significantly increased the risk of stroke, blood clots, heart attacks and breast cancer. The results were so alarming that the NIH canceled the study, citing risk to the study’s participants. The authors of the study suggested that many of the women who used the medications should quit and talk to their doctor.

All women’s bodies produce the hormones estrogen and progesterone. As women get older, their bodies no longer produce the same level of these hormones. As a result, many women experience hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was designed to replace the loss of hormones, especially estrogen. But the hormones in these drugs are not the same hormones a woman’s body produces. The “progestin” component, or MPA, is a man-made imitation of progesterone. It is much more potent than human progesterone, and the body doesn’t recognize it the same way.
Hormone Replacement Therapy ("HRT") places women at a higher risk for breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and other serious illnesses, according to recent studies. Prempro, Premarin, Provera, Premphase, Estradiol, and Medroxyprogesterone are commonly prescribed hormone replacement drugs.
The two types of breast cancer most commonly associated with HRT are invasive lobular cancer and estrogen receptor positive invasive ductal cancer. With a number of HRT products and drugs on the market, including Premarin and Provera, you should find out more information if you have developed any type of breast cancer after taking hormone replacement therapy.
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with breast cancer, ovarian cancer, or with any other female cancer, and if you have ever regularly used hormone replacement drugs for menopause, there is a good chance that the hormones fed your cancer.
While there is a lot of scientific evidence available about the dangerous connections between hormone replacement therapy and breast cancer, many of these drugs are still on the market. A Pennsylvania appeals court has ruled that a state statute of limitations does not bar a product liability claim brought by a woman who alleged that she developed breast cancer as a result of taking the Defendant’s hormone replacement therapy drug. After taking the drug for ten years, the woman developed breast cancer. Provera, a hormone therapy replacement drug, manufactured by Upjohn, and obviously has shown signs of causing severe side effects. Plaintiffs alleged that the manufacturer failed to warn consumers of how severe the side effects of the drug really were. The Defendants claimed that “the lawsuit was barred by Pennsylvania’s two-year statute of limitations for personal injury claims”. The appeals court did not see it this way though. The Court settled on the fact that the Plaintiff’s lawsuit came at a timely manner because it was filed within two years of a Women’s Health Initiative Study in 2002. The Court stated that they agreed that the Plaintiff presented sufficient evidence regarding the matter and the jury found that the “doctors would not have prescribed Provera had Upjohn provided different warnings”. The Court settled on a $1.5 million jury verdict that may be subject for a new trial regarding Defendants in this case.
